Face Coverings and Businesses: Balancing the ADA with Public Health During COVID-19

During the re-opening phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northwest ADA Center has fielded many calls from both businesses, consumers, and advocates regarding face mask policies. When a business requires a face mask or face covering for customers to enter a store, hotel, cafe, etc., many ADA-related questions arise. What are the ADA rights of a customer who cannot wear a face mask because of their disability? How must a business comply with both their local face mask mandate and their obligations under Title III of the ADA in order to serve customers who cannot wear a face mask due to disability?
