Part I: Effective Communication in Health Care Settings

Communicating clearly with a health care provider is important when it comes to making serious health care decisions, and when needing to understand medical procedures, prescriptions, and health maintenance. Effective communication is a critical responsibility of health care providers when it comes to ensuring that people with disabilities have full access to health care information. When effective communication is denied to people with disabilities, there can be significant negative impacts in the administration of quality health care.

 Discussion topics will include:

  • ADA Title II and III legislation overview and definitions of effective communication.
  • Importance of effective communication for people with disabilities in medical settings and consequences of poor access and oversight.
  • Provision of effective auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication.
  • Communication strategies and other types of accommodations, such as environmental considerations and modifications to policies and procedures.
  • Defining "undue burden."
